Restoring the Youthful Appearance to the Face by Adding Natural Volume

What Makes the Face Look Older?

Although everyone tries to avoid fat on their body, in actuality fat is important to the look of youth. As counter-intuitive as it may be, fat in the face gives a youthful full appearance to the face. Think of the contrast between a chubby face in a baby and the thin face of an elderly person. A face that is aging will lose fullness in the cheeks, temples, and lips. As this occurs, the perioral area will show fat loss under the eyes which creates a hollow effect. If the volume loss is restored, the shadowing can be reversed and the reflection of light will be restored. Doing so gives a dramatic change similar to the effect of a face lift.

One of the newest forms of wrinkle fillers on the market is Sculptra. Technically speaking Sculptra is not wrinkle filler, it is a volumizer. It restores the natural volume loss that occurs as we age, the molecular component of aging. A young face has fullness and roundness in the cheeks, under the eyes, in the lips and around the mouth. This fullness causes light to reflect with a shadow which magnifies the appearance of aging.

This volume replacement fills the skin so that it is lifted; not surgically with scalpel and sutures, but lifted by the formation of your body’s own collagen that was created in surrounding the microscopic particles that make up Sculptra.

What is Sculptra made of?

Sculptra is made of poly L lactic acid (PLLA), a synthetic biodegradable polymer that is both absorbable by the body and is biocompatible. PLLA has been widely used for many years in dissolvable sutures and has a proven safety record.

What part of the face can Sculptra be used?

Sculptra is used to correct shallow to deep facial wrinkles and folds, which are treated with the appropriate injection technique. Sculptra is suitable for:

  • Deep folds between the nose and the mouth. Also known as nasolabial folds or smile lines.
  • The lines framing your mouth. Also known as marionette lines.
  • Chin wrinkles.
  • Other areas of the face and body can also be treated.

How do Sculptra and Collagen Work Together?

Sculptra does not give optimal results immediately. Sculptra causes your body to create volume with its own collagen. The creation of collagen takes place over a few months. A typical patient will receive more than one injection session for optimal results.

The effect of filling a compartment above one area with Sculptra means the compartment adjacent to it gets its own lift. For example, the lifting of an area is sometimes best achieved by treating the area above it. The fullness of the injected area will pull the adjacent area tight. Subtitles like this is the reason Sculptra requires advanced training and is rarely offered outside the confines of a board certified plastic surgeon’s office.

Sculptra can be used to restore volume to hollow areas of the temples, cheeks, chin, and under the eyes, as well as to define the jaw line. It is not recommended for use in and around the lips. Lips and wrinkles are best treated with other products such as Restylane or Juvederm.

How long does Sculptra last?

Normally, Sculptra lasts about two years. Sculptra longevity varies among patients, however studies have shown that some Sculptra patients have seen results last up to or greater than two years from the first injection. Dr. Crabtree will recommend when periodic touch up treatments may be needed to maintain your desired look.

Is Sculptra painful?

As with any injection, patients can report feeling pain. However, at Crabtree Plastic Surgery, we use advanced techniques to ensure as minimal discomfort as possible. If you’re scared of needles or simply feel uncomfortable with the injection, you can request an anesthetic (numbing cream) to aid any discomfort. We now also offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) if patients truly desire a pain-free experience.

How much does Sculptra cost?

One vial of Sculptra is $900.  There may be options to buy a series of 3 injections at a reduced cost.  A treat to complete concept. We are partners with the Aspire Rewards Program which offers our patients discounts and rewards on all of their Galderma products.  The information on this program is shown below.  Rest assure, we do all the work to maintain your account so you can just enjoy the benefits.
